Six-year-old Cody Collison may have never seen the ocean before, but by the smiles and excitement that showed on his face as he rushed into the waves at Rehoboth Beach, no one would ever know it. Last week, the fun-loving child was given a chance to fulfill his lifelong dream of being reunited with his grandparents and relatives as he enjoyed warm weather and exciting activities at the resort.
Collison, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., is currently battling cystic fibrosis. The young boy, who had not seen his grandparents in many years, was granted the request June 8-14 with the help of the northern chapter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation and various local businesses.

During the week he stayed in Delaware, dozens of businesses and individuals did their best to extend a warm welcome to the youth.
At the forefront of the effort was the Henlopen Hotel, providing accommodations for Cody, his 10-year-old brother Darrian and father Denver.
The oceanfront room was filled with donated toys, including beach buckets, boogie boards and even a beach-themed “Welcome Cody” banner from Sign-a-Rama.
“When we were first asked by Make-a-Wish to accommodate the family, we were more than happy to do so,” said Laura Downes of the Henlopen Hotel. “Soon, we started asking different businesses in the area to help make the trip extra special for Cody and the response we have seen has been amazing.”
Every morning, an umbrella and chairs were set up on the beach for the family to enjoy. The boy’s grandparents and relatives, who reside in Delmarva, were especially happy to see him having fun on the beach.

The only thing that Collison enjoyed even more than being in the water with his family was cruising above it in a Pirates of Lewes Expedition. The boy was the guest of honor on the ship that brought more than 15 little pirates through the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in search of buried treasure and adventure on the high seas. The “Sea Gypsy,” set to sea by Capt. Barry Askew, encountered bandit buccaneers and loads of fun during the hour long voyage.
The next day, a trip to Funland on the Boardwalk gave Cody and his brother a chance to enjoy the rides and win a handful of prizes. The owners of the facility donated tickets and T-shirts for the family.

Several area restaurants also sent free meals to the family to enjoy at their leisure.
When asked what his favorite activity was on the trip, Collison could not decide given everything that he had done. Between ice cream on the Boardwalk, riding the waves on his boogie board and having fun with his family, the young man simply replied that he liked it all.
The boy’s father was especially happy with how great the trip turned out and thanked everyone in the community who helped make the time for his son so special. “Everything about the trip has been great. It is really fantastic,” he said. “Cody has been so excited all week.”

“The really great part of all of this is how everyone came together to give Cody an unforgettable trip,” said Downes. “A moment like this shows how much our community loves to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Before the Collisons left, Portraits in the Sand took pictures of the family on the beach for them to treasure in his remaining time. They show Cody on the beach with his father and brother, smiling, because all of his wishes had come true.
